An Alice in Wonderland inspired fascinator commission - challenge accepted!
As well as mother of the bride headpieces, bridal fascinators and wedding guest hats, many people know me for the quirkier side of my work! A challenge is always fun, and the material I specialize in, sinamay, just lends itself to experimentation – it is just so versatile!
So when the textile artist and felt aficionado, Lisa Marie Olson, got in touch with me to ask for an Alice In Wonderland inspired creation, I knew this was going to be a great commission to do!
Lisa has recently written a book called Felt Wonderland; a treasure trove of beautifully designed projects to make, from peg bags, to slippers, to pin cushions and lampshades – and many of them can also be made in vegan felt!
There are 12 gorgeous projects in total, all inspired by Lisa’s love of fairy tales and fantasy stories, including Alice in Wonderland.
And that’s where I came in! When Lisa’s book launched, she wanted a headpiece to wear for her book publicity and signings. She came to me with an idea for a fascinator in the shape of a teacup and saucer; would that be possible? Why not?!
I set to work, experimenting and designing, and this was the finished design, in Alice’s colours!
Lisa has quite a collection of fascinators from me now. She says:
“Do you know, I get such a buzz when you create something for one of the events we are lucky enough to go to. I always get compliments and looks of envy. I thoroughly enjoy the process from start to finish and it always takes me to a happy place. That’s what you do... take people to their happy place.”
No two fascinators I make are ever quite the same, even if I am following the same design!! That’s the wonderful nature of handcrafted items, and part of the magic of the handmade world. I am always happy to hear from customers wanting something to be made especially for them, from the stylish and sophisticated, to the more unusual and tea-cup-quirky ideas!
